Farewell Barry Knight
The Board, and Staff of the Renmark Irrigation Trust were saddened by the recent passing of Barry Knight. Barry was a highly valued employee at the Trust for 46 years starting work in June 1972 at 19 years of age.
Barry’s strong work ethic, versatility and friendly manner gained him great respect from both his work colleagues and the irrigation community. Over the years, Barry had many operational roles and attended hundreds of late-night emergency repairs.
Barry is famous for his shirtless appearance in the trench at the 1977 official event of laying the last pipe for the rehabilitation scheme. He was also the Trust’s no. 1 snake handler. Lunches were always the same – toasted cheese and vegemite. We knew when he was coming to work as his motorbike could be heard coming towards the Depot over a kilometre away. Barry also loved to take photos of birds in his spare time. (see below)
In his later years he served as the Watermaster, supporting irrigators, until his retirement in 2019.
The Trust extends its heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Barry will be sadly missed by us all.
